How WorkCover physiotherapy works in NSW
Workers compensation has its own rules and paperwork. Here's how physiotherapy fits in, and what you need to do.

Step one: see your doctor
After a work injury, your doctor issues a certificate of capacity that describes your injury and what you can and can't do at work. Your employer notifies the insurer and a claim number is created.
Pre-approved treatment
In NSW, the first eight physiotherapy sessions are pre-approved once your claim is accepted, so treatment can start straight away. We bill the insurer directly; there is no gap fee for you.
Further treatment
If more sessions are needed, we submit an allied health recovery request to the insurer explaining your progress, the plan and expected outcomes. We turn these around within 24 hours so there are no gaps in care.
Return to work
Recovery and return to work go together. We assess your capacity, suggest suitable duties and liaise with your employer and case manager so you can get back safely and progressively.
Your rights
- You can choose your own physiotherapist
- Treatment under an accepted claim is paid by the insurer
- You can ask your insurer or the Independent Review Office for help if something isn't right
